The fate of league teams

It is a shame that there are a lot of select teams from 6u – 14u. These teams, while they have great coaching staffs and terrific players, this seems to have an effect on the leagues around the area. Brazoria County is over run by select teams, and most associations are getting smaller and smaller. Back in 2005 I know associations had a large number of league teams. However these teams decreased due to frustrations with associations or parents with an idea their darling daughters would have a better chance at high school teams or a scholarship to college.

Some players decide to quit the game due to burn out or new interest. In the pixie leagues, tournaments were large for league teams. Now the associations struggle to even have 10 to 12 teams in a division or two divisions. If we are to have a surviving league teams there must be a way to encourage girls to remain in league. It is a thought in some areas that some of the players are not select material and a team turns into a “daddy ball” team.

Some associations are being diminished by the infiltrations of select managers being elected to boards They give the select teams a preference for their teams and just a minimal thought to the league and the league players. The associations do have difficulties recruiting coaches for these league teams because parents would rather watch the games and then criticize the person trying to do their best for the team.

ASA is the best softball association the world, but there must be a way for these town associations to survive. As insurance for players, coaches, even parents helping out the league teams, local associations are struggling to keep the registration cost down to make it affordable for the families. League tournaments also are struggling with rising umpire fees and tournament fees for these league teams.

If these local associations are to survive, people must volunteer their time for the daughters and the local associations. Cities can not continue to supply lights and maintain fields without the help of these associations alone.

We must recognize these associations, boards and people helping these local associations. The future of local associations and league teams depend on this assistance. Times are tough now, but the survival of the local associations for girls to participate in a sport that encourages team work, self reliance and personal achievements is a character that we need in these times. Having girls meet these goals will be the future of local associations, and the girl’s future to deal with life’s challenges.
